Understanding Your Employment Category

There are several employment categories within the University of Wisconsin System. Your employment category impacts/plays a role in your contract period, benefits, how you do your timesheet and/or leave, job security, and more.

Benefits

The University of Wisconsin System (UWS) offers a comprehensive benefits package to meet the diverse needs of our community. The University contributes towards the cost of several benefit plans. This is a valuable piece of employees total rewards package. Other plans offer favorable group rates and convenient payroll deduction for employees. Some health and life insurance premiums are deducted from salary on a pre-tax basis, saving employees money.

As an employee at UWS, your benefits are an important part of your total rewards package. UWS offers a variety of benefit plans. Most benefits require enrollment within 30 days of date of employment or a qualifying life event. You also can enroll in most benefits during the Annual Benefits Enrollment (ABE) period. Some plans offer enrollment year-round.

Visit UWSP's Benefits page to learn more.

Time & Absence Reporting and Earnings

UW System uses an electronic system, referred to as the Human Resource System (HRS) for employment related processes, including time reporting, leave reporting, and payroll. Visit the UWSP payroll webpage to learn about how to enter time and/or leave, find and understand your earnings statement, and more.

Performance Management

During your initial days and weeks you and your manager should discuss your position description in detail along with the expectations specific to your role and working within your department.

FYI: Within the first few days or week of starting you may receive notices from the ePerformance system notifying you of action regarding performance reviews. These are automated and are not aligned with your hire date. Talk with your supervisor about what steps to take for setting up goals or expectations to support your performance.

After speaking with your manager about your position and expectations, review the UWSP Performance Management webpage to support your performance management.

During Your First Week and After

UW-Stevens Point Past and Present

Since its establishment in 1894 as Stevens Point Normal School, the university has served the state and its citizens in the preparation of teachers of the public schools. Two – and three-year curricula were offered until 1927, when the school was renamed Stevens Point Teachers College and became a degree-granting institution.

In 1951, after liberal arts degrees were authorized by the state, Stevens Point Teachers College became Wisconsin State College, Stevens Point, and a letters and science division was established. Graduate work was inaugurated in the summer of 1960 as a cooperative program with the other nine state college institutions and the University of Wisconsin (graduate studies became a full-time, independent, academic-year program in the fall of 1966). Partially as a result of the establishment of graduate programs-many of the first graduate students were in-service teachers—separate schools were created for education and applied arts in 1961. Later, in 1963, a separate school was established for fine arts.

On July 1, 1964, the name of the institution became Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point. The schools were officially designated colleges on July 1, 1967. The College of Professional Studies and the College of Natural Resources were established in 1970. On July 9, 1974, under the law merging the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin State Universities, the institution became the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). The university offers a variety of curricula in general education, liberal and applied arts, fine arts, pre-professional study, teacher education, adult education, and natural resources.

UW-Stevens Point is part of the University of Wisconsin System (UWS). As an employee, this is important as UWS implements many programs, such as benefits, and has oversight of UWSP's structure, policies, and more. Take a few moments to learn about UWS prior to or on your first day.
