University Service Award – Shelly Janowski
Shelly Janowski, a now retired budget specialist with Continuing Education and Outreach, served as a representative of university staff (formerly classified staff) in various ways for many years.
A 2020-21 representative on the Common Council, in 2019-2020 she was the chair and co-chair of the University Staff Council (USC), a member of the Common Council and the University Staff representative on the Executive Committee and the Chancellor's Cabinet. Her commitment to university staff earned her the University Service Award.
Initially serving as the only USC chair, she attended all the meetings of the council while attending to her own duties. She communicated important matters, paid careful attention to government procedures and addressed important issues.
"She did a remarkable job of representing all university staff," said Raymond. "She was knowledgeable about policies and procedures and wasn't afraid to ask questions if she wasn't."
"She did all this work on top of leading and managing the Continuing Education budget and guiding our managers through new budget model requests from the UW-Extended Campus," said Janowski's supervisor, Outreach Program Manager Jennifer Hess. "She is always prompt in her assistance and request for information from all fronts."
Previously Janowski has served on the Classified Staff Advisory Council and Classified Employee Recognition Awards Committee. She also has chaired the UW-Stevens Point Sustainability Task Force and was a member for several years.
"Her attention to detail, endless hard work and dedication and her professionalism helped contribute to the perception that the USC deserves a seat at the governance table," said Raymond. "For that and all her hard work, I am grateful."
Janowski retired from the university June 1 after 15 years of service. A volunteer for the Humane Society of Portage County, she has served as the volunteer coordinator and as a dog foster parent with her husband.
