Research Areas

​General Algal and plant physiological and community ecology. Interests Phylogeny and evolutionary history of the algae, especially cyanophytes (blue-green algae) and chlorophytes (green algae). Field experience in aquatic and terrestrial systems.​

​​Specific Interests Ecology of crypto­endolithic (rock-dwelling) algae. Determine micrometeorological conditions, substratum differences and seasonal variation. Assessment of photosynthesis and primary production. Evaluation of recolonization rates in s​​andstones. Assessment of soil algal communities in agricultural and adjacent soils, including seasonal changes in genera, biomass and cell. Screen for organisms with unusual and/or beneficial characteristics (i.e. nitrogen fixation, mucilage production, carotene production, herbicide resistance).


Aquatic algal community dynamics. Algal production, community composition, successional sequences and their impacts/influences on aquatic systems.​
