Academic Standing
UW-Stevens Point students must have an official UWSP GPA of at least a 2.0 to remain in academic good standing and allowed to continue studies at the university and graduate. Some majors may require a higher GPA for graduation or to remain within the major, so be aware of what is needed for your particular academic plan of study.
Academic Warning
There are several reasons a student's cumulative or semester GPA may fall below a 2.0. When this happens students are placed on academic warning which serves as a signal to take action to improve their academic performance.
If you have been placed on academic warning it does not mean that you have failed as a student, but instead need to engage in using the resources on campus designed to support students in what way will best help you turn things around.
If you are assigned an adviser within the ACAC, you will be required to participate in the Back on Track programming that includes meeting individually with your academic adviser to discuss what happened and create a plan that sets you up for success.
Whether it be additional academic support, referrals to other professionals that can help you with life challenges, or finding motivation for what plan of study you want to pursue, your academic adviser is here to support and guide you.
You are not alone... and when students engage actively in their plan to get back on track, students often move back into academic good standing within a semester or two.
Academic Probation and Suspension
If a 2.0 cumulative GPA is not met within a semester of being placed on Warning, a student's academic standing may transition to Probation. Without continue improvement, a student may also be suspended. Please refer to the official
Academic Standing policy to learn more on how a student may end up on Probation or Suspension. If you are facing Suspension, work closely with your academic adviser to know what your next steps may need to be.
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
In order to be eligible for financial aid, students at UW-Stevens Point must demonstrate "Satisfactory Academic Progress" (SAP) which involves three components:
- Grade Point Average (GPA)
- Pace
- Maximum Time Frame
For more information on what each of the components mean, view the SAP Policy for Financial Aid.
If you are a student that utilizes financial aid to cover your college costs and are placed on academic warning or probation, you will not meet the GPA needed to remain eligible for financial aid. You may need to submit an appeal to remain eligible for financial aid. Ask your adviser or speak with the
Financial Aid office for more information if you are in this situation.
