How To Verify The Authenticity Of An Email

  1. Contact the email sender and ask if they sent the email.

  2. To do this:

DO NOT reply to the email, open any attachments, or use the phone number or web addresses provided in the email.

All contact options in a phishing email lead back to the scammer who sent the phishing email.

    Instead:

    • Use the phone number saved in your contacts to call the sender (e.g. your vendor, bank, credit card company).

    • OR

    • Do a web search for the company to find their contact information.

  3. Look for encryption.

  4. Departments that deal with sensitive information may encrypt their emails so that the email can only be read by the recipient.

Encrypted emails sent within UWSP will display a lock icon when viewed in your e mail list.

When reading the email a message saying This message is encrypted will display.
