​​​​​​​English Department Scholarships

The department offers a variety of scholarships to students pursuing majors and minors in English. S​cholarship applications ar​e due by March 1.  Students are notified of awards by March 31 and honored at the School of Humanities and Global Studies Award Ceremony in late April.  Award recipients are selected by the department's award committee members. ​​ 

Mary Jo Buggs (sophomore, incoming junior)

Awarded to a sophomore, incoming junior English major.  Two awards are granted, one to a junior and one to a senior.  Students must hold at least a 3.25 GPA in the major.  The students who won as a junior can apply for the senior award.  
  • Award: $1000
  • Apply by March 1, 2023

Mary Shumway Poetry Award

Awarded to a sophomore or junior English major or minor with the best three poems. Poetry is judged by English Department faculty. 
  • Award: $300 
  • Apply by March 1, 2023. Link will be added soon. 

Ellen Specht Sophomore Award 

Awarded to the sophomore with the highest GPA in English at the completion of 12 English credits. 
  • Award: $250
  • A granted scholarship. There is no application. 

Ellen Specht Junior Award 

Awarded to the junior with the highest GPA in English of continuing junior English majors. 
  • Award: $250
  • A granted scholarship. There is no application.   

Ellen Specht Senior Award

Awarded to the senior with the highest GPA in English of all graduating senior English majors. 
  • Award: $250
  • A granted scholarship. There is no application. 

Ellen Specht Outstanding English Major Scholarship 

Awarded to the most outstanding student English major. The English Department faculty select and nominate students. There is no application, but the English Department Award Committee will ask students to submit supplemental materials after their nominations. 
  • Award: $1500
  • A granted scholarship. There is no application. 

Lee Burress International Scholarship 

Awarded to an English major or minor studying at any UWSP international programs site. 
  • Award: $700 
  • Apply by March 1, 2023. Link will be added soon.

Thanking your donor  

Thanking your scholarship donor is an important part of the scholarship process.  UWSP requires scholarship recipients to thank their donor as a requirement prior to distribution of scholarship funds. Information on thanking your donor will be provided to you when your scholarship is awarded.  All thank you letters are turned into the School of Humanities and Global Studies Administrative Office, CCC 486B, for distribution by the office prior to the end of the spring semester.  Postage should be included for off-campus donors and is not necessary for donors with on-campus addresses​.  ​
