Preparing to Live Off Campus

There are many things to consider when moving off campus.  Some frequently asked questions and resources are below.

Where should I live?
If you are eligible to live off campus there are several places to look for housing in the surrounding community.  Prior to doing this we encourage all students to verify that they have met the residency requirements per Board of Regents policy.  Please do this prior to signing any lease.

Upperclass students have the option of living on campus too!  Hyer Hall and the Suites@201 serve as great options for those looking for a new twist on the residence hall experience.

What should I consider before moving off campus?
Price, location, convenience, utilities, yard care, safety, and garbage and recycling should all be things to consider when moving off campus.  To get started, visit, the Tenant Resource Center and gather information that will assist you in choosing a quality place to live and things to consider when choosing a landlord.

Who should I live with?
Living with roommates is an exciting opportunity to deepen friendships, learn and grow from one another, and support one another in your academic success.  It also means navigating a shared living space.  Consider drafting a roommate agreement or having a conversation regarding rent, guests, and other household duties.  Not sure where to start?  Some great questions to consider can be found here.

What about the cost?
UW-Stevens Point has partnered with GradReady to offer free, online financial literacy information. Additionally, the School of Business and Economics offers free financial coaching. Lastly, be sure to visit with Financial Aid about how living off campus might change your award package.

How will I furnish my new apartment?
While it may be tempting to furnish your apartment as inexpensively as possible you should consider what types of (uninvited) guests you may be bringing home with you as well.  Some places to look for good options include thrift stores or second-hand stores as opposed to choosing something left curbside.

Leaving your own furniture curbside violates a City of Stevens Point Ordinance and could result in a fine.  If you need assistance with item removal you can work with the City of Stevens Point.

What is a lease and what should I look for in it?
A lease is a legal, binding contract, between the landlord and tenant.  You have rights as a tenant and it is important for you to understand them.  The Landlord/Tenant Guide provides essential information on lease agreements.  The Wisconsin State Law Library provides resources on lease agreements and disputes.  The UWSP Student Legal Services can also assist with lease questions or disputes.

What resources exist to help me?
Lots of resources and support exist for your success off campus.  The City of Stevens Point, UWSP, and the Stevens Point Police Department are resources that can assist in answering questions, providing support, and assist in your transition off campus.  This frequently asked question document provides information on how to avoid potential fines and disputes.
