Join us for an unforgettable evening of cinema, cuisine, and conversation, led by emeritus English Professor, Julie Tharp. Each class features a thoughtfully selected film paired with a meal (including drinks and dessert) inspired by its themes, setting, or culture. Whether you're a movie buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a unique night out, this series promises to entertain, enlighten, and satisfy all your senses.
The theme of this spring's films is Appearances Can Be Deceiving.
“Anatomy of a Fall” | Wednesday, January 22
In this Oscar-nominated film, a woman is suspected of her husband's murder, and their blind son faces a moral dilemma as the sole witness. Since this is set in the French Alps, we will explore French Savoie tartiflette, Boeuf Bourguignon, baguette, and Savoie cake with cherries in red wine syrup.
“Date Night” | Tuesday, February 18
A case of mistaken identity turns a bored married couple's attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous. Our date night dinner will include crab-stuffed mushrooms, Caesar salad, chicken parmesan, asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, focaccia bread, and tiramisu.
“RRR” | Tuesday, March 18
A fearless revolutionary and an officer in the British force, who once shared a deep bond, decide to join forces and chart out an inspirational path of freedom against the despotic rulers. This southern Indian epic did win an Oscar for the dance scene. We will prepare ourselves for the drama with mango lassi, dal, shrimp masala, eggplant curry, coconut chicken curry, basmati rice, naan, and sweets. Warning, there is a fair amount of violence in this film though it’s not especially gory.
“The Fall Guy” | Thursday, April 17
“The Fall Guy” is crazy, silly, stupid fun with a kick of romance. It is a classic action popcorn movie that doubles as an elegy to stunt performers. We are going to Australia for this film so we’ll try Aussie quiche, steak and onion pie, grilled vegetables, damper bread, and peach melba.
“Fancy Dance” | Wednesday, May 14
Since her sister's disappearance, Jax has cared for her niece, Roki, by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. Our Seneca dinner will feature three sisters soup, ghost bread, wild rice salad with dried cherries, bison burgers, orange-glazed beets, and fresh berry cobbler.
