Room 356 and Room 157
UWSP Campus

Have you ever tried to draw an animal from a photograph and felt you just couldn't get it quite right? Have you heard of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources's (WDNR) Snapshot Wisconsin Program? Would you like to learn more? Then this workshop is for you!

Snapshot Wisconsin is a partnership to monitor wildlife using a statewide network of volunteer-managed trail cameras. Photos of wildlife captured in the program are shared on Zooniverse, a crowd-sourcing website for community science programs. Anyone can visit the site and help classify photos at any time!

In this workshop, we will be accessing Snapshot Wisconsin Zooniverse and learning how to classify photos while looking for images to use for drawing reference.

We will work in black and gray, using graphite pencils. We will cover basic drawing techniques including how to capture correct angles and proportions and what materials to use. We will cover principles of value (light and dark) and cover the basics of animal anatomy for artists.

All materials will be provided. You will have a sketchbook, pencils, and eraser to take home with you.

Jennifer Summers is the Program Development Specialist as the Wisconsin Center for Wildlife (WCW) at UW-Stevens Point. Though she has worked in and studied wildlife science for over a decade, she also has studied and made art for many years. Jennifer enjoys drawing and painting wildlife in her spare time, and occasionally creates artworks on commission. Jennifer greatly enjoys sharing her knowledge about wildlife and natural resources, and finds art is an excellent medium to teach people about the natural world. She earned both her Masters of Natural Resources (Wildlife Ecology) and a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology at UW-Stevens Point. Aside from drawing and painting, Jennifer enjoys birding, photographing wildlife, hiking, and spending time with her husband and dog.

Marie Jensen is a Volunteer Management Program Specialist for Snapshot Wisconsin at the Wisconsin DNR. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology at UW-Madison, and since then has pursued her interest in community science. She is passionate about environmental education and enjoys helping Snapshot volunteers learn about Wisconsin’s wildlife.
Outside of work, she is a hobby artist, especially enjoying drawing, painting, and crocheting. Marie looks forward to combining art and wildlife in this unique workshop!

Liv Gripko is a Volunteer Management Program Specialist with the Wisconsin DNR. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, bolstering her innate passion for wildlife, research, conservation, and education. She has continued to pursue these passions throughout her career working as a research assistant for numerous organizations, a teaching assistant, program specialist with the Wisconsin State Park System, and now with Snapshot Wisconsin. In tandem with her passion for the natural sciences, Liv has always had a deep love for expressing the natural world through art.  In her free time, Liv enjoys creating art in a number of mediums, going on adventures with her dog, exploring new foods, photographing nature, and listening to music!
