IBC Training Requirements

​The following training is required for faculty, staff, research personnel, and students: 

All research or teaching activities involving recombinant and non-recombinant biological materials:

  1. Biosafety Introduction and Risk Assessment

Additional Training IF: Research or teaching activities involve recombinant or Risk Group 2 biological materials:

      1. Risk Management 

Additional Training IF: Research or teaching activities involve recombinant DNA or synthetic nucleic acids.

  1. Recombinant DNA Research

Additional Training IF: Research or teaching activities involving human-derived materials must comply with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.

  1. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens

Additional Training IF: Research or teaching activities involve working with vertebrate or invertebrate animals. IACUC approval will be required as well.

  1. Animal Biosafety

Additional Training IF: Research or teaching activities involve working with Plants and/or Soils.

  1. USDA Permits

Additional Training IF: Research or teaching activities involve working with select agents or toxins defined by the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

  1. Select Agents, Toxins, Biosecurity and Bioterrorism

Additional Training IF: Faculty or staff that will be shipping regulated biological materials.

  1. Shipping and Transportation of Biological Materials

Additional Training for Teaching Activities: Instructors are responsible for providing hazard communication to students and maintaining documentation that student training has occurred. The IBC requires a copy of this training outline to be attached to the BPA form. The following elements should be covered with students:

  • Emergency procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), lab etiquette and safety precautions, laboratory equipment use, and hazardous waste
  • Any additional safety information specific to the activities conducted within the teaching laboratory
  • Provide students with an electronic copy of the protocol that is followed for the teaching course
  • Student should sign the Laboratory Safety Orientation Checklist or similar form acknowledging the training provided
