Alumni to visit during Communication Week 2011

The Division of Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point welcomes back to campus 16 successful alumni for Communication Week 2011, October 3–6. This special event, just before the university’s homecoming weekend, is designed to allow current students to learn from former communication students who have achieved much in their professional careers.

Visiting alumni will serve as guest speakers in 26 different communication classes over the four-day period. Each professional will talk to several classes while on campus. They also will offer career advice and interact with students outside the classroom during scheduled times for professional networking.

Though the communication program frequently invites alumni to return to campus to share their insights with students, this event is special because of its size and variety. The guests include experts in journalism, public relations, broadcasting, marketing and social media as well as interpersonal and organizational communication. All the professionals returning to campus are volunteering their time to help current students succeed in their education and future careers.

“Our alumni have special credibility with our students,” according to Jim Haney, head of the Division of Communication and associate dean of the College of Fine Arts & Communication. “Students are often inspired when they can talk to people who once were in their shoes and now are succeeding professionally at a high level.”

Though the classroom visits add valuable perspectives to communication courses, the opportunity to network with alumni outside of class can help build valuable contacts for students pursuing internships and jobs.

“Our alumni are wonderful role models and resources for students in this challenging job market,” said Haney. “Their success stories and career paths are inspirational.”
