UW-Stevens Point to host Wisconsin River Water Quality Improvement Symposium
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will host the second Wisconsin River Water Quality Improvement Symposium later this month.
The symposium will be held Thursday, March 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Dreyfus University Center, and will focus on the role the Wisconsin River plays in communities along its course. Citizens, representatives from municipalities, industry, stewardship groups, agencies, educators and legislators are encouraged to attend and learn about the Wisconsin River and the monitoring effort that is underway, state level guidance for water quality protection, what the Wisconsin River means to communities along its banks, and what is currently being done to protect or improve conditions in the river and its tributaries.
Part of the Wisconsin River Water Quality Improvement Project, the symposium is a collaborative effort between UW-Stevens Point and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to address blue-green algae that commonly occur in many of its flowages including Lake Wausau, the Petenwell and Castle Rock flowages and Lake Wisconsin. Blue green algae produce toxins that can be harmful to the health of humans, pets, livestock and wildlife. The water quality study aims to identify areas within the basin where phosphorus reductions are necessary to improve conditions in the river and its tributaries, by focusing actions to reduce algae blooms and pollution.
Online registration is available at www.uwsp.edu/cnr/uwexlakes/Registration. Register by March 15 for a reduced fee. For more information contact Nancy Turyk, water resource scientist, at 715-346-4155 or wisriver@uwsp.edu.
