UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble to premier new composition

A new composition for oboe and wind ensemble will be premiered at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble concert on Friday, Oct. 21.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. The piece, titled “Flight,” was commissioned by the UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble and composed by UW-Stevens Point Music Professor Stacey Berk. The two-movement work will be performed by renowned guest artist Nancy Ambrose King, professor of oboe at the University of Michigan and past president of the International Double Reed Society.

“Flight,” written in memory of the composer's father, reflects his love of aircraft and explores the lyrical aspect of the oboe. UW-Stevens Point Music Professor Brendan Caldwell will conduct the evening’s performance. Also scheduled for the concert is “Gumsuckers March” by Percy Grainger and “Bells for Stokowski” by the contemporary Michigan composer Michael Dougherty.

As a part of the Music Department Scholarship Series, tickets are $7 for the public, $4 for senior citizens, $3 for youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point ID. Tickets are available at the University Information and Ticket Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu.
