Fans of Irish folklore and dark humor will enjoy the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Wausau's production of "Playboy of the Western World," performed at 7:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 14-16, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 17, in the James F. Veninga Theater in the UW Center for Civic Engagement, 625 Stewart Ave., Wausau.
Written in 1907 by John Millington Synge, one of Ireland's most celebrated playwrights, "The Playboy of the Western World" stirred considerable controversy when first performed at Dublin's Abbey Theatre, leading to street riots. Throughout the play, Synge uses the colorful language he loved overhearing on the streets of Ireland.
The cast consists of students from UW-Stevens Point's Wausau and Stevens Point campuses, Wausau campus alumni and community actors. Jeffery Wegener, a third-year Wausau student, plays Christy Mahon, the play's unlikely playboy. His love interest and the play's most insightful character, Pegeen, is played by Katherine Roloff, a former Wausau student and University of Minnesota graduate. Students Marciana Olson (Wausau), and Alli Luetenegger and Zoe Zalewski (Stevens Point) also have key roles in the show.
"The Playboy of the Western World" is directed by Theatre and Dance Professor Sarah Rudolph with technical direction by Kris Berge.
General admission tickets are $15, and seniors (62+) and youth (under 18) are $12. UW-Stevens Point students may attend for free with their student ID.
