The public is invited to attend a ceremony to honor veterans and service members at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a 2016 Military Friendly School®.

The Veterans Day ceremony will take place at noon Friday, Nov. 11, in the Dreyfus University Center's Alumni Room. The UW-Stevens Point ROTC Color Guard will present the colors, and Chancellor Bernie Patterson will welcome guests.

Retired Brigadier General Kerry Denson, a 40-year veteran of the U.S. Army and Wisconsin Army National Guard, will be the keynote speaker. Denson served two combat tours as a pilot in Vietnam and has received the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and 35 air medals.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., several veterans will offer a panel discussion. This will include Chancellor Patterson, Denson, students Kelsey Forrest and Nicole Harsh, and Dan Buttery, assistant deputy of the Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs. The panel will be moderated by Nathan Wallin, a student, teaching assistant and captain with the Minnesota Air National Guard's 148th Fighter Wing. Refreshments will be served.

Starting at 2:30 p.m., "Saving Private Ryan" and several veteran documentaries will be shown. They will be moderated by UW-Stevens Point instructor David Chrisinger, who teaches "Back from the Front" transitioning from military to civilian life.

Several specials will be offered on campus this month for veterans and their families, sponsored by the Basement Brewhaus, University Bookstore, Centertainment Productions, the Cardio Center, Strength Center, Outdoor Rentals and University Dining and Summer Conferences.

For more information about these events, specials or veterans' services, contact Ann Whipp, coordinator of Veterans Services, at 715-346-3237 or awhipp@uwsp.edu.

Approximately 325 veterans, National Guard members, reservists and military dependents are enrolled at UW-Stevens Point, said Whipp.
