UW-Stevens Point’s University Evening, ‘Rally Round the Troops’

“Support the Troops” may be a familiar slogan, but what does it mean to those fighting and to those on the home front?

Susan Brewer, history professor and expert on the propaganda of war, will share her perspectives as part of the eighth annual “University Evening” at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Offered to the public free of charge, this distinguished faculty lecture begins at 7 p.m. in Room 221 of the Noel Fine Arts Center (NFAC).

Brewer will discuss how a century of American war propaganda has portrayed the men and women of the armed services. A reception will follow in the NFAC Courtyard.

“As symbols of the unity, strength and generosity of the United States, the troops also served to rally popular support for conflict overseas,” Brewer says. “Such images showed an inspiring war, but not often the real one being fought. ‘It seemed to me that the folks at home are fighting one war and we’re fighting another one,’ summed up a soldier during World War II. ‘I wish they’d get in the same war we’re in.’ “

The University Evening event is a part of the “Visions of War” series sponsored by UW-Stevens Point and Mid-State Technical College from Nov. 7 through Dec. 4.
