University Dining has a lot on its plate this fall

University Dining Services (UDS) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has a lot more on its plate than feeding the students, faculty and staff members this fall.

UDS will be holding its Third Annual Iron Chef Point contest on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 5–7 p.m. at DeBot Dining Hall. Like its Food Network counterpart, the competition gives student teams the chance to showcase their cooking skills as they compete for the title of Iron Chef. This year’s six teams include The 241 Sweet Treats, Cobra Kai, The Squashers, Vicious and Delicious, Hot Buns and Street Fighters. The mystery ingredients will include a local meat and seasonal vegetables, and the judges’ panel is made up of members of the campus community and professional chefs.

In addition, UDS has teamed up with Residential Living on campus to create the “Look Mom, I Can Cook” series to help educate students in the new Suites@201 Reserve on how to prepare quick, easy and inexpensive meals in their residence hall kitchens. Sessions are being held on the fourth floor lounge of the suites every other Tuesday at 5 p.m. UDS chefs are using these sessions to demonstrate proper knife skills, food safety and cooking procedures, and students have the opportunity to prepare their own plate and enjoy a community meal. Committed to being a national leader in the buy local campus dining movement, UDS continues to support local farms and businesses to secure local jobs, economic development and fresh, healthy food for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and staff. Local partners in this project include Malek Family Stewardship Farm, Portesi Pizza, New Grass Farm, Red Barn Dairy, Earthcrust Bakery, The Main Grain Bakery, Heath Farms, Emy J’s Café, Atomic Joe’s Coffee, Ninepatch Farm, Soaring Energy Bars, Turner’s Farm, Screenmasters, Brakebush Chicken, Urban Best, Big Apple Bagel, O’So Brewing Company and Hillemeyer Honey.
