UWSP celebrates Homecoming 2011
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is marking Homecoming 2011 this week with events that invite community members, alumni, students, faculty and staff to celebrate Pointer pride.
Special events include a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of UW-Stevens Point’s new residence hall, the Suites@201 Reserve; tours of a new farm at the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station; the annual parade and picnic; Pointer football game against UW-Stout; and the 2011 Awards Banquet.

Students will take part in activities during the week, including karaoke and decorating competitions, a “Minute to Win It” game, fun run and volleyball tournament, with a Homecoming dance on Friday evening.
On Thursday, Oct. 6, The Cupboard, a food pantry in the lower level of the DUC that supplies students with emergency or supplemental food, will hold a grand opening, ribbon cutting and open house from noon until 2 p.m., with a presentation by Vice Chancellor Al Thompson, Jr.
Alumni events begin Thursday evening, with the third-annual interior architecture alumni reunion and fundraiser. Greek organizations and the Alumni Marching Band will meet for reunions the night of Friday, Oct. 7.
Also on Friday, at 5 p.m., the Suites@201 Reserve will officially open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The public is invited to both the ceremony and the tours that follow. Additional tours of the Suites@201 Reserve will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. No reservations are necessary.
On Saturday, Oct. 8, festivities begin at 9 a.m. with coffee for alumni and friends at Quandt Gym lobby on Fourth Avenue, sponsored by The Coffee Studio. At 9:30 a.m., tours of The Cupboard, will be offered in the lower level of the Dreyfus University Center. The traditional Homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Isadore Street, then follow down Fourth Avenue, along Fremont Street and ending at Old Main.
A large tent on the front lawn of Old Main will serve as the official reunion area from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the all-campus/community picnic. Featuring inflatable games for the kids, university information booths, Pointer mascots, $500 in raffle prizes and tree-climbing demonstrations, there is something for everyone. Lunch is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
Several alumni reunions will also take place Saturday afternoon. The Homecoming football game begins at 1 p.m. at Goerke Field on Minnesota Avenue as the Pointers take on the UW-Stout Blue Devils. For tickets, call 715-346-4100.
The Central Wisconsin Environmental Station in Amherst Junction is giving tours of its new garden and poultry pasture at 3 p.m. (www.uwsp.edu/cwes), and the Moon Walk Wisconsin is being held in Plover at 5:30 p.m. (www.walkwisconsin.com).
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, UW-Stevens Point honors its Distinguished Alumni Council, Alumni Service, Trailblazer, Lifetime Achievement and Hansen Distinguished Service award winners at the 2011 Awards Banquet at the DUC.
A “Homecoming Concert” will be performed by the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra at the Theater@1800 at Sentry Headquarters on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The orchestra also will perform on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. Call 715-346-4100 for tickets.
Saturday evening’s events also include a reunion of residents who lived in Roach, Hyer, Smith and Pray-Sims halls from 1985 to 1988, the 80th anniversary of the Phi Sig fraternity and reunions for Alpha Phi Sorority and the 1961 Championship Football Team. On Sunday, Oct. 9, the Golden Iris Reunion will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., honoring members of the 1956-61 graduating classes.
