10/10/2018

It will be hard to keep your feet still at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Thursday, Oct. 18, as the Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs a "Song and Dance" concert and premieres a new work.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. The program features pieces that are lyrical or rooted in folksongs as well as a variety of dances from around the world. The ensemble is directed Michael Butler, assistant professor of music and director of bands.

The program will include the world premiere of "Song for Silent Voices" by Wayne Oquin, for which Butler led the commission along with 30 other university and high school ensembles.

Additional pieces will include a chamber ensemble work from "The Threepenny Opera" by Kurt Weill, "The Duke of Marlborough Fanfare," "Children's March" by Percy Grainger (conducted by student Brian Cyr) and "Vientos y Tangos" by Michael Gandolfi. The last piece, "Yiddish Dances" by Adam Gorb, is an exuberant fusion of symphonic wind ensemble and Eastern European Jewish klezmer music.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets may be purchased at the door if available. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.
