Enjoy new works that celebrate life at a concert of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Symphonic Wind Ensemble on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. The program features three new pieces that UW-Stevens Point bands helped commission, each title using the word "river" to celebrate something or someone. The ensemble is directed by Michael Butler, assistant professor and director of bands.
The concert will begin with "Rivers of Air" by Jake Runestad, depicting his hiking journeys through Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington state. "River of Stars" by Barbara York, is written in celebration of UW-Stevens Point's 125th anniversary and dedicated to a former director of bands and chair of the Music Department, Donald Greene.
The concert will close with David Maslanka's symphony No. 10, "The River of Time." Maslanka's son, Matthew, completed the symphony after his father passed away, and he worked with UW-Stevens Point students as they prepared to perform the piece.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets also may be purchased at the door if available. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.
