The popular candlelight hike and several nature programs will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Schmeeckle Reserve in May.
The 2019 Spring Candlelight Hike Festival will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the reserve's Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Dr., Stevens Point. Open to the public, the event has a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 per family.
This year's festival, themed "Builders of Schmeeckle," includes two different campfire presentations at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the new Pankowski Friends Amphitheater. "Virtual Schmeeckle" has a Minecraft theme, and "Master Builder Beaver" is Lego-themed.
Visitors may choose from several different torch-lit paths around the reserve and Lake Joanis, as well as enjoy snacks, crafts and passport stations. The reserve's Browse Shop will be open.
In addition, the reserve's last three public programs of the semester will be taught by UW-Stevens Point students and held at the reserve's Visitor Center:
- "Backyard Grocery Store," 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7. Learn about native plants that have medicinal values or that make tasty additions to a salad.
- "Fox Tales," 6-7 p.m. Thursday, May 9. Hear tales of red and gray foxes and look back on Wisconsin history. Dress for the weather.
- "Bold Badgers," 1-2 p.m. Sunday, May 12. Dig up the dirt on the strong-willed badger and learn why they make Wisconsin "The Badger State."
