Enjoy the “wild life” at UW-Steven Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve

 

Enjoy the early warm spring weather, woods and wildlife at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve this May.
 
Offered to the public free of charge, the following programs will be led by UW-Stevens Point students and held at the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center at 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, and on the reserve grounds.   • Secrets of Bees, Tuesday, May 8, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Feared by some and loved by others, bees lead a conflicting and busy life, yet they still have time to help us out. Listen as the secrets of keeping bees are revealed and discover why they are so beneficial.

  • Wonders of Wildflowers, Wednesday, May 9, 5:30–6:30 p.m. Year after year, these colorful creations pop up all around to remind us that spring is here. Enjoy a hike to discover for yourself the wonders of wildflowers and their dependable nature. Dress for the weather.

  • Home Tweet Home, Saturday, May 12, 1:30–2:30 p.m. It’s been said that bluebirds carry their sky on their back. In return, we can provide them a home on earth. Take a stroll to explore how nest boxes have brought these beautiful birds back from the brink of extinction. Dress for the weather.

  • Storm of the Century? Sunday, May 13, 1–2 p.m. Remember the wind storm that ripped through Stevens Point last summer? Come explore how this powerful force of nature changed the landscape for many animals that call Schmeeckle Reserve home and how it impacted many people’s lives in the community and surrounding area.

  • Terrific Turtles, Tuesday, May 14, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Turtles can be found in all kinds of places. Enjoy a scenic hike and find out a little bit more about the turtles of Schmeeckle Reserve and where they call home. Dress for the weather.
 
Schmeeckle Reserve is a 265-acre nature preserve on the north end of the UW-Stevens Point campus. The Visitor Center Browse Shop has gifts for all ages, including a wide variety of nature books and field guides. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
