Enjoy the “wild life” at UW-Steven Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve

Enjoy the early warm spring weather, woods and wildlife at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Schmeeckle Reserve this April.

Offered to the public free of charge, the following programs will be led by UW-Stevens Point students and held at the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center at 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, and on the reserve grounds.   • The Life of Trees, Sunday, April 1, 1–2 p.m. The life cycle of a tree is similar to ours in that it has basic needs as it grows and gets bumps and bruises along the way. Enjoy an outdoor hike while you discover the trials and tribulations of being a tree. Dress for the weather.

  • Exotic Timberdoodle, Thursday, April 5, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Spring nights at Schmeeckle Reserve are filled with the sounds of the courting woodcock, a long-beaked shorebird who live in woods and wetlands. Learn more about these timberdoodles and witness their evening dance.

  • Sneaky Salamanders, Monday, April 9, 6:30–7:30 p.m. The spots, patterns and bright colors of Wisconsin native salamanders do more than look cool. Sneak through the reserve and watch these amphibians avoid hungry predators. Dress for the weather.

  • Scampering Squirrels, Wednesday, April 11, 5:30–6:30 p.m. Schmeeckle Reserve is the home to a variety of squirrels that play an important role in promoting their forest habitat. Dress for the weather.

  • Don’t Frog-get!, Saturday, April 14, 2–3 p.m. Hop along with Ferdinand the wood frog and hear his story about living in beautiful Central Wisconsin. Dress for the weather.

  • Wisconsin Conservation Giants, Friday, April 20, 5:30–6:30 p.m. April is a monumental month in Wisconsin’s conservation history. Celebrate important days in April like famous birthdays and Earth Day.

Schmeeckle Reserve is a 265-acre nature preserve on the north end of the UW-Stevens Point campus. The Visitor Center Browse Shop has gifts for all ages, including a wide variety of nature books and field guides. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
