“Rethinking Recycling” part of UW-Stevens Point Earth Day observance
For anyone who has ever wondered what happens to material after they throw it in a recycling bin, where it goes or how it is processed or reused, “Rethinking Recycling” will provide the answers at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The event, featuring speakers, interactive displays and prize drawings, will be held Wednesday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Specht Forum (Sundial) on campus as part of this year’s Earth Day celebration and in conjunction with the annual Eco Fair. The Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology is joining with the local chapter of the American Chemical Society, the UW-Stevens Point Sustainability Office, and students, to host the event with support in part by the UWSP Student Government Association and Uniek, a design and research center in Waunakee.
Representatives from companies and organizations that pick up cardboard, e-waste, plastic containers, paper and other recyclable material at UW-Stevens Point will describe how the material is handled and each presentation will include time for audience questions. Scheduled to present are representatives from the Chemistry Department and Resource Recovery at UW-Stevens Point, Veolia, Styrene Products, 5R Processors, Rock Oil, and the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology. A complete schedule is attached.
Capping the event is an evening presentation, “From Garbage to Stuff: How We Recycle Plastics,” by William Carroll, an organic chemist and past president of the American Chemical Society. Carroll’s presentation is at 7:30 p.m. in Room D102, Science Building.
April 22 is designated as Earth Day around the world. Because the date falls on a Sunday this year, UW-Stevens Point will celebrate Earth Day on April 18 to increase participation opportunities for students, faculty and staff.
