Fourteen
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students and their advisers will be among
more than 130 undergraduates from around the University of Wisconsin System to
exhibit their research at the state capitol building next week, while another
will present his research at the U.S. capital later this month.
The UW System’s
13th annual “Posters in the Rotunda” event will be held in Madison Wednesday,
April 13. Elected officials, UW System Board of Regents and others will have
the opportunity to view poster presentations of the research projects and speak

The following
students will present their research:
- Victoria
Nellessen of Bartlett, Ill., a senior wildlife ecology major, worked with
Assistant Professor of Biology Sarah Jane Alger. Her research studies the bond
between captive zebra finch pairs and how it relates to reproductive success.
- Michael
Marichal of Appleton and Alan Bustamante of Stevens Point, both senior history
and international studies majors, worked with History and International Studies
Associate Professor Valerie Barske to research the evolution of Japanese
nationalism since the 1930s.
- Neil
Foegen, a senior geoscience and hydrogeology major from Appleton, worked with
Chemistry Associate Professor Jason D’Acchioli as well as students at Princeton
University. Their research was on finding the oxidation states of transition
metals.
- Zak
Driscoll, a senior pre-medicine major from Oxford, worked with Associate
Professor Nate Bowling on using organic chemistry in the design of modern
electronics.
- Senior
athletic training majors Jamie Destache of Sussex, Chelsie Harrison of Wonewoc,
Valerie Mielke of Green Bay, Madalyn Sawdey of Medford and Sarah Vitale of Lake
Elmo, Minn., worked in a research group studying how sport specialization
affects lower extremity biomechanics and injury risk. Their adviser was
Associate Lecturer Beth Kinslow.
- Senior
athletic training majors Samuel Joswiak of Weston, Nick Lemke of Medford,
Ramona Marquardt of Stevens Point and Sarah Pettit of Elmwood Park worked in a
research group that studied the effects of carbohydrate consumption versus
water for athletes in endurance tests. The group’s adviser was Associate
Lecturer Beth Kinslow.
UW-Stevens Point
junior biochemistry major Joseph Grosskopf of Waupaca will also represent the
university at the 20th Annual Posters on the Hill in Washington D.C. April
19-20. His research, “A Novel Method of Analysis of Pierce’s Disease Resistance
of Grapevines,” was developed with Associate Professor of Biology Qiang Sun.
