Pallen retiring from UW-Stevens Point after 40 years of service
In his 40 years at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Clark Pallen, Plover, has seen technology on campus become an integral part of student’s academic and everyday life. Students now have almost unlimited access to campus resources via the campus network and Internet using laptops, smart phones and mobile devices.
A supervisor with Administrative Information Systems, Pallen will retire from UW-Stevens Point’s Information Technology Department on Dec. 30.
“The last 40 years has been a challenge every day and I’ve enjoyed every challenge,” he said. “I will definitely miss the opportunity to solve problems and serve my campus and students.”
When Pallen came to UW-Stevens Point in 1972, he was programming IBM 402 accounting machines using hard wired boards. “Things have changed dramatically from the days of mainframes and using punched cards to enter programs and data,” he said.
Pallen held the first data administration role in the UW System, working in systems analysis and development, programming and database administration. He also served as interim director for Administrative Information Systems in the 90’s and again for several years until 2006. In recent years he has worked in Information Security, leading the Sensitive Data Protection Initiative Team as they work to reduce identify theft and improve data security campus wide.
Pallen has also enjoyed working on projects such as developing student billing programs, tuition fee assessment and accounts receivable application systems that are still being used after 30 years.
Pallen looks forward to retirement and spending more time with his wife Betty, traveling and enjoying family and friends. The couple plans to spend winters in Arizona and summers in Illinois and Wisconsin, close to their daughters, grandchildren and family.
