UW-Stevens Point to host LGBTQ film festival
A free-to-the-public film festival hosted by a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point faculty and staff organization explores the diversity of issues in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community.
“Out on Screen: An LGBTQ Film Festival” will begin Wednesday, Feb. 29, and is sponsored by UW-Stevens Point Faculty and Staff Gay-Straight Alliance. The festival will feature seven award-winning independent films screened over a period of three months and accompanied by introductions and post-screening discussions.
The first film in the series, “We Were Here,” was the winner of the 2011 Outfest Outstanding Documentary Feature, and the first documentary to take a deep and reflective look back at the arrival and impact of AIDS in San Francisco. The film will be screened at the Dreyfus University Center Theater, 1015 Reserve St., on Wednesday, Feb. 29, beginning at 7 p.m. Following the film, a post-screening discussion will be held with performers from the recent UW-Stevens Point Theatre & Dance production of playwright Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart,” which looks at the impact of AIDS in New York City during the 80s.
Other films in the series include “Mosquita y Mari,” which was an official selection for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Its screening will be the film’s Midwest premiere. In “Gun Hill Road,” macho Enrique returns to the Bronx after three years in prison only to find the world he once knew has turned upside down as his teenage son, Michael, explores a sexual transformation well beyond Enrique’s grasp and understanding. “Tomboy” tells the story of a ten-year-old girl who lets friends in her new neighborhood believe she is a boy.
The mission of the UW-Stevens Point Faculty and Staff Gay-Straight Alliance is to be a visible presence on campus and bring together LGBTQ individuals and their allies across all areas of the university for the purpose of reducing fear, prejudice and discrimination. The group educates members of the campus community on LGBTQ issues and promotes a safe and open environment at UW-Stevens Point in order to welcome, encourage, discuss and support diversity.
