UW-Stevens Point continues LGBTQ film festival
A free film festival that explores the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) issues will continue at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a second film on Thursday, March 8.
“Gun Hill Road” will be shown at the Dreyfus University Center Theater at 7 p.m. The screening is open to the public and free of charge as part of the “Out on Screen: An LGBTQ Film Festival,” sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point Faculty and Staff Gay-Straight Alliance. The series includes seven award-winning independent films screened over a period of three months and is accompanied by introductions and post-screening discussions.
“Gun Hill Road,” a Grand Jury Selection for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of macho Enrique who returns to the Bronx after three years in prison. There he finds the world he once knew has turned upside down as his teenage son, Michael, explores a sexual transformation well beyond Enrique’s grasp and understanding.
Other films in the series include “Mosquita y Mari,” an official selection for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The screening of “Mosquita y Mari” will be the film’s Midwest premiere. Another film, “Tomboy,” tells the story of a ten-year-old girl who lets friends in her new neighborhood believe she is a boy.
The mission of the UW-Stevens Point Faculty and Staff Gay-Straight Alliance is to be a visible presence on campus and bring together LGBTQ individuals and their allies across all areas of the university for the purpose of reducing fear, prejudice and discrimination. The group educates members of the campus community on LGBTQ issues and promotes a safe and open environment at UW-Stevens Point in order to welcome, encourage, discuss and support diversity.
