Festival of India marks 24 years
A Stevens Point community festival celebrating the culture of India as well as supporting education for India’s women and children will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Stevens Point Area Senior High School, 1201 North Point Drive. The festival is cosponsored by Multicultural Affairs, the South Asia Society and the College of Fine Arts & Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The 24th annual Festival of India, presented by SHAMA, Inc., offers Indian classical music and cuisine, workshops on cooking, folk dancing and Sitar, a yoga fair, bazaar and other activities, as well as a seven-course buffet dinner. Gil Halstead of Wisconsin Public Radio will emcee the evening’s entertainment. Yoga workshops and a variety of activities begin at 3 p.m., workshops at 4 p.m., dinner from 5–7 p.m., and stage performances begin at 7 p.m.
Admission is free for all activities except the dinner. Tickets purchased in advance for the dinner are $14 for adults, $9 for ages 6–12 and for UW-Stevens Point and high school students with ID, and free for children under six. Tickets will be an additional $2 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased in Stevens Point at the Stevens Point Area Co-op, Kindred Spirit Books and the Point Motel. Tickets are also available at Motel 6 in Wisconsin Rapids, the AmericInn Motel in Plover, Days Inn in Wausau or by PayPal online.
