Work on the cupola that began in September will be completed soon.

UW-Stevens Point cupola ‘Topping Out’ ceremony

The newly restored cupola atop Old Main at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will be celebrated with a “Topping Out” public ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 3.

The event will be held at Old Main, 2100 Main Street, Stevens Point, from 10 a.m. to noon. This event will include the installation of a new weathervane on the restored cupola. In addition, a time capsule will be created to mark this moment in UW-Stevens Point’s history.

Remarks from Chancellor Bernie Patterson and UW-Stevens Point Foundation President Jeff Martin and others will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Founders Room of Old Main. The celebration will also include a display of the old weathervane and other historic artifacts as well as holiday goodies, cider and coffee. The public is invited to attend this free event. Parking will be available on the east side of Old Main in Parking Lot A.

“This is a historic occasion for UW-Stevens Point, as the previous weathervane stood on top of the Old Main cupola for more than a century,” said Patterson.

Artist and ironworking expert Boleslaw Kochanowski Jr. was charged with replicating the 100-plus-year-old weathervane. He learned ironworking under the guidance of his father, an accomplished second-generation master blacksmith from Poland. Kochanowski’s work was part of the recent "Birds in Art" exhibition of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau. Ellis Stone was responsible for cupola restoration work.

Reservations for this event, though not necessary, may be made by calling Sarah Newby in the UW-Stevens Point Foundation Office at 715-346-3908 or snewby@uwsp.edu.
