Courtyard Connections merges math and dance
Two seemingly unrelated subjects will be the focus of “Courtyard Connections” at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
Dance and mathematics will combine in a free public presentation, “Fibonacci Rhythms: Using Mathematical Patterns in Choreography,” held at 7:30 p.m. in the Courtyard of the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage Street.
Sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point College of Fine Arts & Communication, the presentation will be led by faculty members Cynthia McCabe, chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and Jeannie Hill, assistant professor of dance. McCabe and Hill have studied how the two subjects connect using space, time and energy and will present how mathematical patterns connect with compositional design for the stage using Fibonacci numbers. The courtyard venue offers the audience the opportunity to interact with McCabe and Hill during the presentation.
Courtyard Connections, now in its second year, was designed to be an interactive experience to enhance learning and connections on campus and in the community. Previous presentations have included explorations of how music connects man to nature and how voice and song connect to man’s primal state.
