The work of an internationally renowned composer will be featured in an upcoming performance of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Concert Band and Wind Ensemble.
David Maslanka will serve a residency at UW-Stevens Point March 8-11, culminating in the concert at 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. During his residency, Maslanka will discuss composition and orchestration techniques as well as coach different ensembles and soloists who will perform his music.
The Concert Band will present "An American Tapestry," featuring Maslanka's work and those by Frank Ticheli, Scott McAllister and Louis Moreau-Gottschalk. Faculty members Andrea Splittberger-Rosen and David Hastings will perform McAllister's "Concerto Americana," a high-wire duet that pushes the limits of extended clarinet and saxophone techniques.
The Wind Ensemble will present "Life is a Journey, Not a Destination," featuring work by Maslanka, Scott Boerma, Michael Markowski and Jacques Press. Each work contains symbolism of the journey through life. "Zirk," by Boerma, will feature new music faculty member Andres Moran on horn.
Michael Butler, assistant professor of music at UW-Stevens Point, directs both groups.
Maslanka has written more than 130 compositions for wind ensembles, orchestras, choirs, chamber groups and soloists. His works have been published and recorded by numerous labels. He has served on the faculties of State University of New York at Geneseo, Sarah Lawrence College, New York University and Kingsborough Community College, and has been a freelance composer since 1990.
Concert tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the performance for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out.
