The Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra will honor a winner of its Concerto Competition at a concert Sunday, Nov. 20. It will be at 4 p.m. in Michelsen Hall of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Noel Fine Arts Center.
First-place winner Zsanna Bodor of Stevens Point is a violinist and vocalist, who has been a member of the orchestra since its founding in 2014. As part of the concert, she will perform a solo of the Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, by Felix Mendelssohn.
The concert also will include works by Berstein, Tchaikovsky, Barber, Rimsky-Korsokov, Saint-Seans and Sibelius. Tickets are available at the door for $3 each or $10 for a family of four or more.
Bodor is a senior at Stevens Point Area Senior High School, where she is an advanced placement scholar and was named a National Merit Scholar semifinalist. Among her musical honors is being selected for the Summer Choral Institute at Kansas State University and member of the Central Wisconsin Honors Choir and runner up at the state level for the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association vocal competition.
The youth orchestra also honored percussionist David Pickar of Schofield with first place and soprano saxophonist Annika Enders of Stevens Point with an honorable mention. Pickar will have a solo in a concert next April.
Founded in partnership with the UW-Stevens Point Music Department, Aber Suzuki Center, Continuing Education and Outreach and music educators in Central Wisconsin, the Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra program has two full symphony orchestras, the symphony and the philharmonia. These ensembles are open to all students, who will be placed based on their sectional audition. Students will receive coaching from top music majors of the university's Music Department, university faculty and Aber Suzuki Center faculty.
