Find adventure and camp fun at CWES this summer

ew skills at summer youth camps through the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES), operated by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. 

The station’s camp program is accredited by the American Camp Association, which means experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross and other youth agencies review programs to assure up-to-date safety standards. Staff members are trained in first aid, CPR, outdoor skills, games and waterfront safety. 

While many camps are already full, several overnight and day camps are accepting youth for the summer months, including: 

  • Earth Explorers, June 28-July 1, ages 7-9, $275 – The week will include swimming, crafts, pond exploration and campfires.
  • Adventure Trip: Earth and Sky, July 12-17, ages 14-16, $425 – Campers will explore a cave and spend a week camping and rappelling at Devil’s Lake State Park.
  • Outdoor Odyssey, July 26-31, ages 12-14, $425 – Enjoy excursions to a high ropes course, the Dells of the Eau Claire and paddling and camping around Portage County.
  • Family Day Camp, Thursday, July 2, ages 5-10 and one adult per family minimum, $45/child and $25/adult – Enjoy archery, Sunset Lake activities and arts and crafts as a family.
  • Day Camps – 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., ages 5-10, $45 per day
    • Dragonfly Detectives, Tuesday, Aug. 4 – Learn about and catch dragonflies by Sunset Lake.
    • Garden Harvesters, Wednesday, Aug. 5 – Taste foods from the CWES garden, harvest fruits and vegetables -- and take some home.
    • Crafty Critters, Wednesday, Aug. 12 – Identify some of the creatures that live in the woods and create one during craft time.
    • Down and Dirty, Thursday, Aug. 13 – Dig into the earth to discover earthworms and other creatures then create a bug hat to take home.
