Scheduling the many athletic match ups for eight teams
within the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would be much more
difficult without the help of a few mathematics students at the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Learn how Professor Andy Felt and his students develop
these schedules at the Center for Athletic Scheduling on campus as they present
a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10. “Using Math to Schedule
Athletic Conference Seasons” will be presented in the Pinery Room of the
Portage Country Public Library, 1001 Main Street, Stevens Point.
This is the fourth talk in the nine-part College of
Letters and Science 2015-2016 Community Lecture Series. The public may attend
free of charge.
“This talk will cover how the Center for Athletic
Scheduling students express conference requirements as mathematical equations
to find better schedules than could be created by hand,” said Felt. The
students schedule for WIAC and several other NCAA Division III conferences
around the country.
Felt has been at UW-Stevens Point for 15 years. Before
that, he was a chemical engineer in the oil industry. His specialty is
operations research, where practitioners use mathematics to optimize and manage
large operations. Earlier this year, Felt won the university’s first Excellence
in Teaching, Scholarship and Service Award. He started the Center for Athletic
Scheduling in 2006.
