A
two-year documentary project that shares the stories of the local Hmong
community will be chronicled in a free, public presentation by two University
of Wisconsin-Stevens Point faculty members.
“Finding
the Middle Way: The Hmong People of Portage County” will be discussed at 6:30
p.m. Tuesday, May 6. Tori Jennings, an anthropology lecturer who was a project
producer on the film, and Maysee Herr, an assistant professor of education who
served as a cultural consultant, will talk about the making of the documentary.
The
lecture will be held in the Pinery Room of the Portage County Library, 1001
Main Street, Stevens Point. It is the last of an eight-part 2013-14 Community
Lecture Series sponsored by the College of Letters and Science at UW-Stevens
Point.
Directed
by Matthew Brown of Stevens Point, the documentary features interviews with
local Hmong residents and community members that explore the history, value and
complexity of the Hmong people in Portage County over the past 30 years.
“This
project illustrates the power of stories, of listening with the intent to
understand, and how these simple acts can change what we think we know about
ourselves and others,” said Jennings.
“We
hope that the film is the beginning of a conversation about what is next for
the Hmong people in our community,” said Herr, who is now working on a project
that looks at the changing role of women in the Hmong culture.
