Lecture examines psychological barriers to success
A free public lecture offered by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will illuminate some of the psychological barriers that may prevent low-income students from graduating from college.
Jody Lewis, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, will present “Social Class in Education: Psychological Factors Limit Upward Social Mobility” on Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the Pinery Room at the Portage County Library, 1001 Main St., Stevens Point. The talk is the last in the College of Letters and Science 2011-2012 Community Lecture Series.
“A college degree can be especially important to a low-income student who needs a good paying job to pull themselves out of poverty,” says Lewis. “The primary questions I am trying to answer with my research are what factors prevent many low-income students from graduating and how we can help them.”
Lewis earned her doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She teaches both introductory and advanced psychology courses at UW-Stevens Point including courses on research methods in psychology, learning, perception and evolutionary psychology. Her research focuses on classroom instruction such as the improvement of activities and exams, college retention and ways to increase motivation in education.
