UW-Stevens Point receives high honor for communications

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been recognized by CASE V, the six-state Midwest chapter of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Higher Education, for the university's internal and external communications amid the state budget crisis that propelled Wisconsin into national headlines earlier in the year.

The Teresa Du Bois Exline Gold Award for Best Practices in Marketing and Communications went to UW-Stevens Point for its communications and legislative advocacy activities led by Chancellor Bernie Patterson and the office of University Relations and Communications in response to state budget cuts. Initiatives including campuswide and community budget forums, the Web-based advocacy network, "Talking Point," a series of informational emails to campus, Chancellor Patterson's speeches, and statewide and national media relations were all reviewed by the judges.

Judges noted that the university’s efforts during the budget-related crisis helped Chancellor Bernie Patterson during a challenging first year at UW-Stevens Point.

“This response shows the high level of professional excellent that the new chancellor had access to in responding to pressures from state government. When support was needed, the University Relations and Communications staff provided full and creative tactics to help the chancellor garner public support,” the judges said.

Other institutions honored by CASE V include seven Big 10 universities, Marquette and Lawrence. UW-Stevens Point also received the Gold Award for Best Practices in 2008.
