University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Chancellor Bernie Patterson has approved a request to extend the timeline for a workgroup focused on budget and curricular changes. Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Greg Summers told faculty, staff and students that an advisory group needs more time to thoroughly consider all options.
No decisions have been made about possible program changes or offerings.
A group advising the provost has met twice weekly since Sept. 5 to develop a curriculum plan that addresses fiscal challenges and serves students' academic and career goals. The Academic and Budget Advisory Work Group includes all five deans, 10 faculty members and two members of the Student Government Association. It is the latest of several committees that have explored ways to best meet the needs of current and future students and the communities in Northcentral Wisconsin.
"We have sought to be transparent and deliberative throughout this process," Summers said. "We've engaged faculty and shared governance groups in constructive dialogue as we consider a range of suggestions and models. While the final decisions will not be easy, we will afford a full opportunity for an exchange of ideas."
The workgroup expects to provide recommendations to the chancellor by mid-November.
Decisions will be made using the following principles, which have guided the process all along. They will:
Reimagine what it means to be a regional comprehensive university in the 21st century.
Dedicate efforts to building on UW-Stevens Point's strengths and student interests.
Integrate the liberal arts and humanities throughout curriculum.
"This framework will lead us into the next decade, focused on student success," Patterson said.
