Social Work in Marshfield and Wausau

Our social work program strives to help students understand and positively impact our world. We strive to develop every student’s critical thinking, communication, and analysis skills to ensure graduates enter the workforce as competent, ethical, and skilled professionals. As a helping profession, social work involves working with individuals, families, groups, and communities from diverse backgrounds in varied situations focusing on a wide array of human concerns. Bachelor’s level social workers are eligible for employment in a variety of practice settings including child and family, interpersonal violence, mental health, substance abuse, health care, aging, disabilities, and criminal justice.

Fit Your Schedule with Flexible Classes

The Marshfield and Wausau campuses offers a full-time or part-time social work program delivered in a hybrid classroom and online format to maximize flexibility for working students. Most in-person courses are offered on Monday afternoons/evenings during the fall and spring semesters, and online elective courses are offered every summer to meet student needs.

Scholarship Opportunities for Fall 2020

The Department of Sociology and Social Work is committed to helping new students achieve their social work/human services education goals. We have a limited number of scholarships to help get you started on your Marshfield or Wausau campus program.

The scholarship awards range from $500-$1,000 each and are equally divided between the fall and spring semesters. These scholarships do not require an application. To be eligible a student must meet the following criteria:
  • Be admitted to UWSP for fall 2020 on the Marshfield or Wausau campus as a first-year student or transfer.
  • Declare an AAS in Human Services or a B.S. in Social Work.
  • Enroll in at least 6 credits on the Marshfield or Wausau campus in each semester.
Selection will continue until all scholarships have been awarded.

Internship Sites in Your Local Community

Social work students complete a 400-hour internship during their senior year. The program strives to secure internship sites for students in their home communities when desired. For students interested in  completing their internship abroad, international social work internship options exist.

CSWE-Accredited for Career and Graduate School Advancement

Our social work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the national organization overseeing social work education in the U.S. This accreditation allows a clear path for students to become certified social workers in Wisconsin. Over 95% of UWSP social work students pass the Association of Social Work Boards examination to earn this credential. Students intending to continue on to graduate school in social work are eligible for advanced standing due to this accreditation. This means that they can complete graduate school in social work in one year at most institutions.

Research Opportunities

Social work students may participate in student-led and faculty-mentored research with the opportunity to present at the annual College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Research Symposium and other venues.

Meet Your Social Work Professors

UW-Stevens Point social work faculty have a broad range of experience within the field. Students admitted into the social work major will be assigned one of the full-time social work faculty members as an adviser. Meet your professors!
