Select Clery Act Policies
In this section, you will find information about select UW-Stevens Point policies. UW-Stevens Point Timely Warnings, PointerAlerts (known in the Clery Act as timely warnings and emergency notifications, respectively), and missing student procedure are mandated by the Clery Act and the policies are published in the UW-Stevens Point Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report.
Timely Warnings
The Chief of University Police and Security Services (or designee) will contact, when time permits, the
following offices in order to develop Timely Warning Notices for the University community to
notify members of the community about serious crimes against people that occur on campus or
near campus, where it is determined that the incident may pose an on-going threat to members of
the University community: University Relations and Communication, Office of the Dean of Students (Dean on call).
The Chief of University Police and Security Services (or designee), in addition to officers and University staff, also work closely with the
local police and sheriff offices on events and situations that may pose an ongoing threat to
the campus community. The Chief of University Police and Security Services (or designee) will send
Timely Warning messages, without consultation, when emergency situations dictate that
messages be sent immediately. The previously mentioned offices will assist with follow
up communication to students, staff and faculty.
Timely Warning Notices are distributed for the following Clery reportable crimes: arson,
criminal homicide, and robbery. Cases of aggravated assault and sex offenses are considered on a
case-by-case basis, depending on the facts of the case and the information known by the
University Police Department. For example, if an assault occurs between two students who have
a disagreement, there may be no on-going threat to other University community members;
therefore, a Timely Warning Notice would not be distributed. Sexual assaults are considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the facts of the case, when and where the incident occurred,
when it was reported, and the amount of information known by University Police/UW-Stevens Point. Timely Warning Notices may be distributed for other crimes as determined
necessary by theChief of University Police and Security Services (or designee), Office of the Dean of Students, and University Relations and Communication.
In an effort to provide timely notice to the University community, and in the event of a serious
incident which may pose an on-going threat to members of the University community, a
campus-wide mass e-mail Timely Warning Notice is sent to all students and
employees on campus. The alerts are generally written by the Director of Protective Services (or designee), Office of the Dean of Students, and University Relations and Communication. These notices may also be followed up by messages
sent via the PointerAlert messaging system, posted to the Hot Topics section of myPoint, or posted as signage around campus.
Updates to the University community about any particular case resulting in a Timely Warning
Notice may be distributed via email, PointerAlert messaging system, posted to the Hot Topics section of myPoint, or posted as signage around campus, in addition to campus websites.
