You must apply to the School of Education for admission to the Professional Education Program by either September 22 and February 22 (Friday prior to any date which falls on a weekend). Simultaneously, you must apply directly to the Department of World Languages and Literatures for admission in a separate procedure. Your application to the Department of World Languages and Literatures will take the form of a portfolio, to be submitted to the department office (488 Collins Classroom Center) by one of the following deadline dates: September 22 OR February 22.
To be eligible for admission: You must have completed the School of Education requirements, as well as the following Portfolio requirement (see list below)
Application for Admission to World Language Education: Portfolio Requirement - Your portfolio must contain the following 1) a resume 2) a current print-out of your degree progress report (DPR) 3) A carefully written essay in English in which you explain your reasons for wanting to become a foreign language teacher. Your essay should be no more than two typed, double-spaced pages with standard margins and font size.
Transfer students and those holding an undergraduate degree from UWSP or another accredited institution must also apply for admission to the World Language Professional Education Program and meet the minimum standards listed above.
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for admission to the Professional Education Program as set by the School of Education.
Minimum Standards To Student Teach
* Minimum Grade Point Average:To be eligible to student teach in foreign languages, you must complete the teaching major or minor with an overall GPA of 3.0 in all college-level courses taken in the language you plan to teach (regardless of declaration of academic bankruptcy) and a minimum grade of B in the foreign language methods course (FLED 333). In addition you must fulfill the following special requirements.
* Residency RequirementYou must complete an appropriate period of residency in a country where the language is spoken, or participate in an alternative language immersion experience which must be approved by the Department. All teacher candidates in world languages should participate in a language based semester study abroad program, such as those offered by UWSP in France, Germany, and Spain, or a junior year abroad. With the prior approval of the Department, students may substitute alternative experiences such as immersion programs or summer study abroad.
