The Central Wisconsin Musicians are a blend of university students and community members of all ages. The ensemble explores many styles of music including traditional concert band literature, marches, orchestral transcriptions, popular music, and film/show music. Course goals include working cooperatively in a positive environment to create an enjoyable and meaningful musical experience. The ensemble is open to all musicians with playing experience on their instrument who enjoy making music. The ensemble performs two concerts per semester. Registration includes both rehearsal series leading up to the concerts, though members who can only commit to one concert series are still welcome to participate.

Rehearsals take place Wednesdays, February 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4, 11 | 6:30-8pm in the Main Building, Room 206.
Concert: Thursday, March 12 at 7pm in the Civic Center for Engagement, Veninga Theater.

Instructor


Dr. Patrick Phalen has been involved in music education for over 30 years. During this time, he has taught at the elementary, middle school, high school and college levels. Patrick’s education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin, a Master’s Degree in Education Leadership from Marion College, a Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance and Jazz Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and a Doctoral Degree in Education Leadership from Edgewood College in Madison, WI. Dr. Phalen is also an avid performer on trumpet. He toured internationally with the R&B band “The Groove Hogs” which made the Billboard charts on their third album. He has played with the Broadway tours of Chicago, The Producers and most recently, Motown. He has also played in the back up bands for the performers Frankie Vallee, Burt Bacharach, Bob Hope, Rodney Dangerfield and Martin Short; has performed with The Dallas Brass and The Canadien Brass, and has played in the back up bands of The Temptations, The Four Tops and The Manhattan Transfer. Currently, Dr. Phalen is the director of the UWSP-W concert band and jazz ensemble, adjudicates at jazz festivals, and works with bands around the state of Wisconsin. He performs regularly with his bands Big Mouth, Brass Differential and Hip Pocket and tours with his Chicago Tribute Band “Alive Again”​

Cancellation Policy


Refunds will be granted if the Continuing Education and Outreach office is contacted at least seven (7) days before the start of a class. No refunds will be given with less than seven (7) days notice. Programs that involve pre-ordering of materials and/or travel will not qualify for a refund unless your space can be filled from a waiting list. We reserve the right to cancel a course due to low enrollment, severe weather, or instructor illness. ​BE SURE to provide your email address and phone number when registering so we can contact you if a class is cancelled for any reason. Email Continuing Education Customer Service at  uwspceweb@uwsp.edu to cancel your registration.
