Purpose of the Training
Operating a 15-passenger van requires special attention to safety, handling, and best driving practices. This training is designed to ensure university employees understand how to safely operate these vehicles, minimize risks, and comply with university policies and state regulations.
Who Should Take This Training?
This training is mandatory for all university employees who are responsible for transporting students, faculty, or equipment using a 15-passenger van.
Training Structure
Training will consist of 100 minutes of in classroom instruction followed by a written test in the morning (9 - 10:40 am). Once the test is passed you will be required to have one hour of driving a 15-passenger vehicle with the instructor before receiving a certificate. Be prepared to select the one-hour afternoon drive time during registration (noon-4 pm).

- Higher center of gravity and risk of rollovers
- Proper loading and weight distribution
2. Pre-Trip Inspection
- Checking tires, brakes, lights, and mirrors
- Ensuring proper fluid levels and emergency equipment
3. Safe Driving Techniques
- Adjusting for blind spots and limited visibility
- Maintaining safe following distances
- Avoiding sharp turns and sudden maneuvers
4. Passenger and Cargo Safety
- Proper seating arrangements and seatbelt usage
- Secure loading and weight distribution
- Managing passenger behavior to prevent distractions
5. Emergency Procedures
- What to do in case of an accident or breakdown
- Contacting university emergency services
- First aid and safety protocols
6. University Policies and Legal Requirements
- Licensing and certification requirements
- University-specific driving policies
- Insurance and liability coverage
Completing this training ensures University of Wisconsin employees are well-prepared to drive a 15-passenger van safely and responsibly. Safe driving practices help protect passengers, other drivers, and the university community. Certifications are good for three years. Training is required again upon experation of certificate.
