Pattern Name:EGYPTIAN
Pattern Motif:Landscape
Glass Type:Non-Flint
Era:1880s
Description:50 Favorites - 25. The EGYPTIAN pattern reflects the popularity, in the 1880s, of decorative motifs derived from exotic cultures. Three different scenes appear in large rectangular fields around he goblet: a palm tree with a sphinx, a classical building above the lettered identification “Ruins of Parthenon,” and a camel with a large triangular from that Ruth Webb Lee identifies as a tent but that more likely represents a pyramid. It is doubtful the pattern was inspired directly by the gift of the “Cleopatra's Needle” obelisk to the United State in 1877, as suggested by Bessie M. Lindsey, since the obelisk is not featured in the design. This event, that culminated with the erection of the obelisk in New York's Central Park in 1881, nervertheless did stimulate popular fascination with ancient Egypt and surrounding cultures.
