Description:50 Favorites - 34. EXCELSIOR with MALTESE CROSS Numerous pattern variants of EXCELSIOR exist to confuse the collector. The basic version, according to John and Elizabeth Welker, is the BARREL EXCELSIOR. This goblet is illustrated by Doris and Peter Unitt (Volume II) and Alice Hulett Metz and features loop-shaped panels at the base of the bowl, each surmounted by a large round panel. The space at the intersection of these panels takes the shape of a large diamond. The Unitt's example has an offset-flute stem. The example illustrated by Metz has a paneled stem with a knob just below the bowl. A popular variant, Metz identified as somewhat more scarce, has the large diamond subdivided into four smaller ones suggesting a Maltese Cross; hence the name. (50 Favorites catalogue) U1, p.38.
