Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from a multi-course BOW workshop?
Workshops span a weekend, usually beginning on Friday around noon
and ending Sunday after lunch. The weekend is divided into four sessions
and you pick the four classes in which you'd like to participate.
Typically, there are more than 20 different classes to choose from.
What kinds of classes are offered?
Class topics are diverse but can be divided into three areas:
shooting sports, fishing, and non-harvest activities (like camping,
kayaking, plant identification and more). The classes are taught with
the hands-on approach and equipment is provided. A brief description of
the classes is provided in the workshop registration form.
Do I need experience to participate?
Beginners are both welcome and encouraged to participate! No prior experience is needed.
Where are the workshops held?
Usually, workshops are held at camps or outdoor learning
facilities. The atmosphere is "outdoorsy" but comfortable. Participants
stay in cabins or dormitory-style rooms, usually 2-3 persons per room.
Facilities have modern conveniences like flush toilets, hot showers, and
heated cabins. Hot and nutritious meals are served and included in the
registration fee.
What if I snore?
If you snore, you are among the 40-50% of BOW participants who
snore too. We recommend that light sleepers bring ear plugs. Try not to
be self-conscious if you are a person who snores – most participants
will be tired after a fun day of activity and will sleep right through.
How do I register for a workshop?
Registration generally opens 4-5
weeks before the date of the workshop. Notification is sent to our email list, and announced through social media. You may register online using the link provided, or print and mail the registration form from our website.
How much is the fee?
The fees vary depending on the type of activity being offered and
include meals, lodging, equipment use, instruction and evening
entertainment. A weekend workshop is around $500 and scholarships are
offered on a need basis. Check with your local program coordinator for
more details.
Will I get all my favorite classes?
We process registration forms on a first come, first serve basis.
Every attempt is made to register you for your first choice classes, but
sometimes they become full and we'll have to enroll you in your second
or third choices. The registration packet will provide clear
instructions on how to list your top picks. A confirmation packet will
be mailed to you approximately two weeks before the date of the
workshop. It will provide information on your class schedule, directions
to the facility, a packing list, and other necessary details.
What am I required to bring?
When you register for the workshop a suggested packing list is made
available to you. Mainly, you'll need to provide your own clothing,
bedding, linens (towel, washcloth), and traditional camp items like a
flashlight, rain jacket, sunscreen, bug spray, camera etc. It’s
recommended to bring clothes for all types of weather, casual clothes
for the evening, pajamas, baseball cap or hat with brim, windbreaker or
rain gear, shoes that can get wet, extra pair of shoes, and extra socks.
We provide all the recreational and safety equipment necessary to
participate in the classes.
Can men join in on the fun?
BOW is an equal opportunity program. Men who have not had the
opportunity to learn these activities elsewhere may enroll as
participants. In the past 15 years, there have been a handful of men who
have participated in the workshops.
