Ruffed Grouse Field Day: From Research to Management

5:30 p.m. Friday, April 14, to 12 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2023
Treehaven, Tomahawk, Wis.

Join Ruffed Grouse Society staff and UW-Stevens Point's student chapter of The Wildlife Society in a hands-on experience with ruffed grouse. As part of the workshop, you will join the Treehaven Ruffed Grouse research team and learn firsthand about the preferred habitats of ruffed grouse and how to incorporate them into your property. Through this workshop you will participate in:

  • ruffed grouse drumming surveys
  • locating ruffed grouse using radio telemetry
  • a tour of Treehaven's ruffed grouse habitat demonstration area
Field Day Agenda

Friday, April 14: Dinner and a  presentation.  Ruffed Grouse Society staff will present on the state's ruffed grouse ecology and the state's population.

Saturday, April 15:
  • Sunrise drumming surveys followed by breakfast: In small groups, you will collect data on drumming logs through auditory surveys.
  • Hands-on Stations: In small groups you'll rotate through 3 stations where you'll be engaged in:
    • locating ruffed grouse using radio telemetry
    • a tour of Treehaven's ruffed grouse habitat demonstration area
    • a discussion on opportunities to manage private lands for ruffed grouse​

Target Audience

This workshop is designed for landowners and nature enthusiasts who want to learn more about ruffed grouse. The workshop will involve some walking along well-groomed trails.
