Aquatic Plant Identification Trainings
Experts Susan Knight of UW-Trout Lake Station, Paul Skawinski from UW-Extension Lakes, and Ali Mikulyuk and Michelle Nault from the Wisconsin DNR will introduce you to the many groups of aquatic plants that call Wisconsin lakes home, and teach you how to distinguish between the various species.
Training sessions will help participants:
- Understand the ecological role of aquatic plants in Wisconsin's water bodies
- Learn how to distinguish the many species of aquatic plants that exist in Wisconsin
- Learn about various aquatic habitats and which species like to grow there
Your $25 registration fee includes training and a lunch. This does not include lodging.
New this year will be the option to take an "Aquatic Plant Taxonomic Assurance" exam at the end of the workshop. Passing this hands-on exam will add your name to a list of assured service providers published on the University of Wisconsin website. In the future, use of assured service providers will be encouraged by DNR grant funding programs.
While registering, participants have the option to purchase the Through the Looking Glass, 2nd Edition field guide for $20 during registration which will be delivered to you at your workshop. Aquatic Plants of the Upper Midwest, 3rd Edition is currently out of stock. This book is being reprinted in a new printing format (same edition) this spring and may be available for sale at the workshop.
These publications are also available through the UWEX Lakes bookstore.
Please note: Participants should bring a hand lens and their own copies of field guides, if possible.
Please also bring rain gear, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. for outdoor afternoon activities.

Breakout Sessions
Advanced Aquatic Plant ID
Know your plants pretty well? Practice your taxonomic keying skills on some of the more cryptic species you might encounter. Species covered could include thin-leaved pondweeds, watermilfoils, bladderworts, naiads, bur-reeds, and others. This workshop is guided by the needs of the participants.
Algae Identification
Learn to identify some of Wisconsin’s most common macroscopic algae, including filamentous green algae. Learn how to recognize blue-green algal bloom-forming groups as well.
Point-intercept Aquatic Plant Survey Protocol
Learn or review the Wisconsin standardized aquatic macrophyte point-intercept sampling protocol. Use this breakout session to standardize your methods and practice in-field sampling, data recording, and aquatic macrophyte identification.
Wetland Invasive Species ID
This session will explore many invasive wetland plants that are threatening and invading waterbodies across the state. Learn how to recognize and identify the invaders of most concern, and how to distinguish them from similar native species .

Directions
From Highway 73 or Highway 39
Take Hwy 23 eastbound toward Green Lake. Turn right on S. Lawson Drive. Follow the curve to the right after the bridge to follow South Street. Turn left on Gold Street, then right on Hill Street. The Town Square Community Center will be on your left. Street parking is available on all sides of the Town Square.
From Ripon/Fond du Lac
Take Highway 23 westbound toward Green Lake. Turn left on Thrasher Drive. At the first intersection, continue straight on N. Lawson Drive. Turn left on Mill Street, and then right on Hill Street. The Town Square Community Center will be on your right. Street parking is available on all sides of the Town Square.
Choose one of two trainings - both options consist of a full day and the next morning until 12:15.

Lodging
Dormitory-style lodging is available at Kemp Station for $40 per night per person. Beds, pillows, linens, wool blankets, and bathroom/shower facilities are provided, but participants should bring their own sleeping bags and personal care items.

A number of aquatic invasive plants are on Wisconsin's doorstep. Learn to identify these new invaders before they arrive, so you are prepared to recognize them.
Directions
From Highway 51 southbound
Travel south on State Highway 51 to Hwy 47 in Woodruff. Turn left (south) on Hwy 47. Continue south on Hwy 47 for 3 miles and turn right onto Kemp Road (immediately after Mid Lake Road). Travel about 2 miles down Kemp Road, keeping to the right the whole time. Kemp Station is at the end of the road. Follow the signs to the Connor Forestry Building.
From Highway 51 northbound
Travel north on State Highway 51 and turn right on County Hwy D. Travel about 4 miles on Hwy D and turn left (north) on Hwy 47. Continue north on Hwy 47 for about 3 miles and turn left on Kemp Road. Travel about 2 miles down Kemp Road, keeping to the right the whole time. Kemp Station is at the end of the road. Follow the signs to the Connor Forestry Building.
