Focusing on Healthy Lakes: Breakouts and Fieldwork (Limit: 35) - Wednesday, 9:00 am-4:30 pm (includes box lunch)

Wisconsin's Healthy Lakes initiative, launched in 2013, is a statewide effort to protect and improve lake health by increasing lakeshore property owner participation in habitat restoration and runoff and erosion control projects. Healthy Lakes includes information and education, technical assistance, and funding for five best practices suitable for typical lakeshore properties. The best practices include fish sticks, 350 ft2 native plantings, diversion, rock infiltration, and rain gardens. Healthy Lakes interest continues to grow with 407 best practices funded on 56 lakes as of 2017, not including the “do-it-yourselfers."
This day-long workshop includes the following:  Healthy Lakes overview; technical, grant administration, and community engagement breakout groups; and field-based site assessment, including best practice selection and siting.  Visit www.healthylakeswi.com to learn more.

Bonus! Participants will also learn about and visit an innovative turtle tunnel providing a safer way to cross a formerly dangerous highway.

Water Action Volunteer (WAV) Basic Training (Limit: 15) - Wednesday, 9:00 am-4:30 pm (includes box lunch)

This session will be for those interested in becoming a citizen stream monitor with the Water Action Volunteers (WAV) program.  This “Basic Training” will be a slightly improvised version of our usual 6 hour field training, covering stream temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, biotic index, flow and habitat.  We WILL go to the stream unless the weather is terribly uncooperative – so dress appropriately and bring hip boots or waders if you have them.  All other equipment WILL be provided for the training and available for loan so that all attendees will leave the session ready to be an active WAV monitor for the 2018 season.

Presenter:
Peggy Compton, Water Action Volunteers Coordinator, University of Wisconsin Extension

Capacity Building for Lake Organizations (Limit: 40) - Wednesday, 9:00 am-12:00 pm (break) 1:30-4:30 pm

The Wisconsin Lakes Partnership is developing new ways for lake organizations (lake districts, lake associations) to better leverage their own assets to protect our legacy of lakes. This workshop will discuss the “mental model” that we’ve developed to map out the relationships between lake organizations and lake health. We will work from that model to discuss a range of strategies that lake groups have used to overcome challenges and make headway towards healthier lakes. We will then hone in on four distinct dimensions of lake group capacity: membership, relationship, organizational, and programmatic. Participants will engage in an exercise to create short “how to” guides related to these different capacity dimensions, and we will share the guides developed in the fall of 2017 at the Advanced Lake Leaders training.

Presenter:
Eric Olson, Lake Specialist, UW-Extension Lakes, UW-Stevens Point
Aaron Thompson, Assistant Professor of Natural Resource Planning, UW-Stevens Point and Specialist, UW-Extension Center for Land Use Education
Buzz Sorge, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (retired)
Mike Engleson, Director, Wisconsin Lakes
